Ellen Huang

Yuesui “Ellen” Huang is an author, speaker, media personality, activist and founder of SPEF.

She’s also a single-parent.

Her Story

In 1986, Ellen’s husband was kidnapped and killed. She was left alone to raise her 3 children.

This tragedy should have broken her. But instead, it lit a fire.

Ellen decided to counsel families in her spare time. And eventually became an activist for social reform.

She backed democracy in Taiwan. She fought for equal gender rights. And pushed for a social welfare system to protect human rights.

Ellen developed a passion for education. She taught at the University. And wrote many books.

She also spoke in public, as well as on TV and radio shows.

Achievements

In 1995, Ellen founded SPEF, the Single Parent Educational Foundation. Its aim, to aid single-parent-families in Taiwan.

In 2000, she was named a National Policy Advisor to the President.

Ellen donated her entire salary. She gave it the students of the Taitung area. Through her gift, they were able to buy uniforms and daily meals.

In 2003, she founded the Unwed Mothers and Children’s Center. It would be the most extensive of its kind in Asia.

Present

Ellen has helped found over 40 foundations, like SPEF. As of today, SPEF has aided over 10,000 single-parent-families.
